February 10th: After a seven-month trial, progressive New York attorney Lynne Stewart was convicted today on charges of conspiracy to aid and abet terrorism. Her co-defendants Mohammed Yousry and Abdel Sattar were also convicted. They all face 20 to 40 years in jail. Stewart has announced plans to appeal. She is currently free on 500,000 bail but is limited to travel in New York State. During the course of Stewart's seven-month trial government prosecutors failed to produce a single witness or piece of evidence linking Stewart to a single act of terrorism or to any other illegal activity. read on

Who is Lynne Stewart?
Radical human rights attorney Lynne Stewart has been falsely accused of helping terrorists. On Tuesday, April 9, 2002, she was arrested and agents searched her Manhattan office for documents. She was arraigned before Manhattan federal Judge John Koetl. This is an obvious attempt by the U.S. government to silence dissent and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech and defend the rights of all oppressed people. First They Came for Lynne Stewart ... By Marjorie Cohn - t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Now they're coming for the lawyers, and we must all speak out.  Last Thursday, after 13 days of deliberations, prominent New York civil rights attorney Lynne Stewart was convicted of conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists, and defrauding the United States government. Her 7-month trial was held in the same federal courthouse where the Rosenbergs were tried for conspiracy to commit espionage more than 50 years ago. Stewart faces between 35 and 45 years in prison. read the editorial at: www.truthout.org/docs_2005/021505A.shtml

LYNNE STEWART: YOU CAN’T LOCK UP THE LAWYERS  March 11, 2005, on Democracy Now. Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzales’ guests Lynne Stewart, Michael Tigar (Lynne’s attorney) and Ramsey Clark, former US attorney general, discuss Lynne’s March 10 conviction.. Observed Ramsey Clark: “Our freedom in society depends on [Lynne’s] type of courage and commitment. Lynne is an enormously courageous and brilliant lawyer. But more than that, she's a loving person and she loves this country too. And she did what is best for it. And she's right. And history and perhaps, we hope, the courts will vindicate her.” She needs our support. www.lynnestewart.org <http://www.lynnestewart.org/> All profits from the sale of this 4-part video will go to the Lynne Stewart Defense Fund.

YOU'LL GO DOWN IF YOU DON'T STAND UP FOR YOURSELF:  Lynne Stewart
NYC, April 14, 2003  The night before a million people converged on New York City to protest the Bush-Cheney war on Iraq, Stewart ended her remarks at an evening rally with a poem from Bertolt Brecht:  "And I always thought: the very simplest words Must be enough. When I say what things are like Everyone's heart must be torn to shreds. That you'll go down if you don't stand up for yourself.  Surely you see that." 10 minutes, quicktime 4.3 megs - thanks to IMC

HEY JUDGE, THAT'S YOUR JOB:  Lynne Stewart (NYC Feb. 14, 2003) Federal Judge Barbara Jones capitulated to New York City police demands that no permit be issued for the Feb. 15 march planned many weeks in advance.  The judge, notes peace movement attorney Lynne Stewart, said she would "not second-guess the police." Such abdication by the third branch of government is a judicial stamp of approval for a police state, Stewart says.

BE CRANKY, ROUSE THE PEOPLE: Lynne Stewart
Ashcroft has singled out defense attorney Lynne Stewart as the leader of the opposition to the destruction of the Constitution. "That is also on their agenda. The ‘Unpatriot Act’ is their vehicle. The White House would like it if you are an activist and you need a lawyer, there will be no lawyers to call. I am here to defend the right to defend."
